Nancy Spero, Acts of Rebellion

Nancy Spero is one of the most intriguing artists of her generation. Her multifaceted oeuvre explores the existential questions of humankind-the relations between the sexes, in particular, and the role of violence. For Spero, it was the human figure-and from 1974 onwards, exclusively depictions of women-that served as her most important means of expression. Resorting to images ranging from ancient Egyptian and pre-Columbian representations of women to modern images taken from fashion advertising, she places them into new semantic contexts. Isolated from their original surroundings, the motifs raise fundamental questions concerning women and the notion of femininity that lie at their heart. Spero's works are unique in their formal appearance, combining collages, prints and paintings. Many consist of long bands of paper that the artist then covered with collages and scripts or prints with specifically produced printing plates-a redefinition of the concept of ancient murals or scrolls. Based on significant works from the artist's estate and public institutions as well as private collections, this book provides a comprehensive insight into the creative output of one of the most original female artists of the second half of the twentieth century, spanning more than four decades. Acts of Rebellion furthermore sheds light on the art scene of the time and on Nancy Spero's role, in particular, by allowing contemporary witnesses to speak. Co-published with Museum Folkwang, Essen

Just Marriage

From the ground breaking legal decisions on gay marriage to the promotion of marriage for low-income families, the 'sacred institution' of marriage has turned into a public battleground. Who should be allowed to marry and is marriage a public or private act? Should marriage be abandoned completely? Or should marriage be redefined as a civil institution that promotes sexual and racial equality? As the fierce national debate over same-sex marriage and civil unions continues, Mary Lyndon Shanley argues that while the state should continue to play a role in regulating personal relations, the law must be fundamentally reformed if marriage is to become a more just institution. Fourteen prominent writers and thinkers respond, including Nancy F. Cott, William N. Eskridge, Jr., Amitai Etzioni, Martha Albertson Fineman, and Cass R. Sunstein.

Arrogance of American Power

Nancy Snow's provocative book tackles the government's manipulation of the term 'anti-American' and other propaganda techniques, connecting them to the attempts of U.S. administrations and media_past and present_to project a better U.S. image rather than address the issues behind why the country's image is so poor. If America cares what others think, Snow argues, it needs to get over itself as the 'number-one country.' The government needs to spend less time diverting public attention and more time enlisting citizens to help improve foreign relations. And the public needs to exercise its democratic right to dissent, rather than letting the government or the media halt foreign policy debates with labels, propaganda, and arrogant rhetoric.

The China Threat - Memories, Myths, and Realiti...

Nancy Bernkopf Tucker confronts the coldest period of the cold war -- the moment in which personality, American political culture, public opinion, and high politics came together to define the Eisenhower Administration's policy toward China. A sophisticated, multidimensional account based on prodigious, cutting edge research, this volume convincingly portrays Eisenhower's private belief that close relations between the United States and the People's Republic of China were inevitable and that careful consideration of the PRC should constitute a critical part of American diplomacy. Tucker provocatively argues that the Eisenhower Administration's hostile rhetoric and tough actions toward China obscure the president's actual views. Behind the scenes, Eisenhower and his Secretary of State, John Foster Dulles, pursued a more nuanced approach, one better suited to China's specific challenges and the stabilization of the global community. Tucker deftly explores the contradictions between Eisenhower and his advisors' public and private positions. Her most powerful chapter centers on Eisenhower's recognition that rigid trade prohibitions would undermine the global postwar economic recovery and push China into a closer relationship with the Soviet Union. Ultimately, Tucker finds Eisenhower's strategic thinking on Europe and his fear of toxic, anticommunist domestic politics constrained his leadership, making a fundamental shift in U.S. policy toward China difficult if not impossible. Consequently, the president was unable to engage congress and the public effectively on China, ultimately failing to realize his own high standards as a leader.
